Dry, light with lots of finesse & tension. A great interpretation of a complex Riesling from mineral slate sites with 0.9 g/l residual sugar and 6.4 g/l acidity. A Kabinett classic, as only the Mosel can produce. And what does the CAI stand for? For the initials of the founder of the winery: Carl August Immich.
The Immich-Batterieberg winery in Enkirch, Rhineland-Palatinate, is one of the oldest wineries on the Moselle. First mentioned in a document in 908 AD, the Immich family of winemakers ran the estate from 1425 and shaped viticulture on the Moselle. The eponymous "Batterieberg" was shaped into a vineyard in the 19th century by the founding family with the help of blasting batteries. Since the relaunch in 2009, oenologist Gernot Kollmann has been in charge of the traditional winery, building on the great wines that the estate has produced through the centuries. He describes his Riesling style as unadorned and powerful, and critics particularly appreciate it. Philipp Clementi is responsible for the outdoor operations & passionately & experiencedly takes care of the extreme steep slopes, i.e. the care of the vines, at the winery. On average, the rootless Riesling vines, which are traditionally cultivated in single-pole training, are 60 years old. Late in the year, the grapes are selectively harvested by hand at the optimal time of ripening.
